Missouri SLP Definitions 

The Missouri speech-language pathology legal and regulatory definitions. 

Board” - The Missouri Board of Registration for the Healing Arts.

Commission” - The advisory commission for speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

“Hour of Continuing Education”- A minimum of fifty (50) minutes and up to a maximum of sixty (60) minutes spent in actual attendance at and/or completion of an approved continuing education activity; continuing education units (CEUs) are rounded down to the nearest hour; and

“Licensee”- Any person licensed to practice speech-language pathology and/or audiology in the state of Missouri.

“One (1) Continuing Education Unit (CEU)” - Equivalent to ten (10) clock hours of approved continuing education (ten (10) clock hours = 1.0 CEU, one (1) clock hour = 0.1 CEU).

“Person” - Any individual, organization, or corporate body, except that only individuals may be licensed.

“Practice of Speech-Language Pathology” - Provides screening, identification, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, intervention, including but not limited to prevention, restoration, amelioration and compensation, and follow-up services for disorders of:

    • Speech:  articulation, fluency, voice, including respiration, phonation and resonance;
    • Language, involving the parameters of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatic; and including disorders of receptive and expressive communication in oral, written, graphic and manual modalities;
    • Oral, pharyngeal, cervical esophageal and related functions, such as dysphagia, including disorders of swallowing and oral functions for feeding; orofacial myofunctional disorders;
    • Cognitive aspects of communication, including communication disability and other functional disabilities associated with cognitive impairment;
    • Social aspects of communication, including challenging behavior, ineffective social skills, lack of communication opportunities.

“Speech-Language Pathologist” - A person who is licensed as a speech-language pathologist who engages in the practice of speech-language pathology.

“Speech-Language Pathology Aide” - A person who is registered as a speech-language aide by the board, who does not act independently but works under the direction and supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist.  Such person assists the speech-language pathologist with activities which require an understanding of speech-language pathology but do not require formal training in the relevant academics. 

“Speech-Language Pathology Assistant” - A person who is registered as a speech-language pathology assistant by the board, who does not act independently but works under the direction and supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist practicing for at least one year.
