Alabama OT Continuing Education

What are the continuing education hour requirements?

Occupational Therapists: An OT licensed in Alabama must obtain 1.5 CEUs (or fifteen (15) contact hours) annually or 3.0 CEUs (or thirty (30) contact hours) every two (2) years.

Occupational Therapy Assistants: An OTA licensed in Alabama must obtain 1.0 CEU (or ten (10) contact hours) annually or 2.0 CEUs (or twenty (20) contact hours) every two (2) years.

Which type of courses are considered acceptable?

All continuing education must be relevant to occupational therapy or coursework approved by another health profession board or organization.

How do I convert hours to CEU?

Ten (10) Contact Hours = 1 Continuing Education Unit = 1 Academic Hour = 1 Professional Development Unit.

Are employer courses acceptable?

All coursework and in-services required by your employer are acceptable except corporate compliance or any in-service or course specific to employment i.e.: employee handbook, leave, etc.

Are CPR courses acceptable?

One (1) CPR course is acceptable each renewal period. A copy of the card is proof for one contact hour.

Are there any limitations on course subjects?

No more than a 1/3 of the total required hours may be academic, administrative, management, supervision of level II student fieldwork or presentation hours with the remainder being direct patient care objectives. A copy of transcripts will be required for academic courses. Conference materials or letter from conference provider noting presentation is required for presentation hours (presentation time only, no preparation time, and the course may be used only one time for CE credit).

Level II student fieldwork supervision is acceptable to meet continuing education requirements (limited hours– see below). A letter from the student’s school or a copy of the AOTA student form with your name and signature indicating the OT/OTA as one of the primary supervisors will be required for proof.

There is no limit to the number of hours the OT/OTA may obtain with self-study (home study, online or webinars).

What are the CE documentation requirements?

Proof of attendance (certificates, letters or transcripts) with course title, date(s) and contact hours/CEUs/PDUs must be submitted. Proof of attendance without noted hours will only be allowed .5 contact hour (1/2 hour) of credit.
