Ohio PT Supervision Definitions
Direct Supervision - The PT or PTA is in the same building and available to immediately respond to the needs of the patient. The PT or PTA shall have direct contact with the patient during each visit.
Other Licensed Personnel - Any person holding an Ohio license to practice as a health care practitioner in a profession other than physical therapy, and not holding a valid license who is working under the direct supervision of a PT or PTA, as delegated by the physical therapist, and is performing tasks and duties related to the delivery of physical therapy.
Physical Therapist - A person who performs the initial examination unless that PT has transferred the responsibility for the management of the patient's care to another PT and that PT agrees to the transfer.
Physical Therapist Assistant - A person holding a valid license assist in the provision of physical therapy treatments, including the provision of patient education and instruction under the supervision of a PT.
Student Physical Therapist - A student enrolled in an accredited or candidacy status entry level physical therapist education program who is completing a required clinical education course. Effective January 1, 2020, a student PT shall be at least eighteen (18) years old.
Student Physical Therapist Assistant - A student enrolled in an accredited or candidacy status entry level physical therapist assistant education program who is completing a required clinical education course. Effective January 1, 2020, a student PTA shall be at least eighteen (18) years old.
Supervision - The availability and responsibility of the supervisor for direction of the actions of the person supervised.
Supervising Physical Therapist - The PT who is available to supervise the PTA, the student PT or student PTA, other licensed personnel, or unlicensed personnel. The supervising PT may be the PT who performed the initial examination or another PT with whom that PT has a formal or informal agreement.
Supervising Physical Therapist Assistant - The PTA who is appropriately available to supervise the student PTA, other licensed personnel, or unlicensed personnel.
Unlicensed Personnel - Any person who is on the job trained and supports the delivery of physical therapy services by personally assisting the PT, PTA, student PT and/or student PTA while the PT, PTA, student PT, and/or student PTA is concurrently providing services to the same patient.
