Continuing Education Hours
To renew a license, a PT and PTA licensed in South Dakota must complete thirty (30) continuing education hours during the two (2) year license period.
Activities for Continuing Education Requirements
To meet the continuing education hours required, an activity must:
- Directly relate to the practice of physical therapy;
- Be planned, organized, and designed to maintain, improve, or expand a PT’s PTA’s practice knowledge and skills to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public; and
- Be approved by:
- The American Physical Therapy Association;
- The American Physical Therapy Association - South Dakota Chapter;
- The State Board of Physical Therapy; or
- A board responsible for licensing physical therapists or physical therapist assistants in another state
Reporting Continuing Education
Each PT and PTA must sign a statement to confirm completion of the continuing education hours on the license renewal application and must present proof of completion if requested by the Board of Physical Therapy.

Waiver of Continuing Education Requirements
The South Dakota Board of Physical Therapy may grant a full or partial waiver of the continuing education requirements if the PT or PTA submits an affidavit to the board stating that the applicant was prevented from completing the requirements because of any circumstance listed in SDCL 36-10-51. Before attempting to renew a license, a PT or PTA must submit the affidavit for a waiver to the board at least thirty (30) days prior to the expiration of the two (2) year period.
