How many continuing education hours are required during a reporting period?
Physical Therapists: PTs licensed in Minnesota must complete twenty (2) hours of continuing education every two (2) years.
New Licensees: For physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, the first two-year continuing education cycle begins on the January 1 following the date of initial licensure. Future cycles will run consecutively from that point. Continuing education courses taken between the date of initial licensure and January 1 of the following year may be credited toward the first cycle.
Physical Therapy Assistants: PTAs licensed in Minnesota must complete twenty (2) hours of continuing education every two (2) years.

How is credit hour defined?
One hour of credit shall be given for each 60 minutes actually spent on educational activities.

A minimum of two (2) of the twenty (20) hours of continuing education each cycle shall be on professional ethics directly related to the practice of physical therapy.

What type of courses or activities are not allowed?
Credit shall not be given for entertainment or recreational activities or programs, employment orientation sessions, holding an office or serving as an organizational delegate, individual self-directed study programs, management seminars not directly concerning physical therapy operations, meetings for the purpose of making policy, or noneducational association meetings.

What are the reporting requirements?
At the license renewal immediately following the physical therapist and physical therapist assistant two (2) year continuing education cycle, licensees shall attest to compliance.

Periodically, the board shall select a sample of the licensed physical therapists and physical therapist assistants and request evidence of the continuing education to which they attested. The board may request evidence of continuing education for up to two consecutive compliance periods. The compliance period or periods for which the board requests evidence of continuing education must be those immediately preceding the current compliance period. Documentation may come directly from the licensee or from state or national organizations that maintain those types of records.
