Arkansas Physical Therapy Definitions

The Arkansas physical therapy legal and regulatory definitions. 

“Consultation by Means of Telecommunication” - The rendering of a professional opinion, expert opinion, or advice by a physical therapist to another physical therapist or health care provider through telecommunication technology.

“Direct Supervision” - That the supervising therapist is on-site and available for consultation.

“FSBPT”- The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy.

“Mobilization”- A passive movement accomplished within the normal range of motion of the joint. It is a manual therapy technique comprising a continuum of skilled passive movements to the joints and/or related soft tissues that are applied at varying speeds and amplitudes, including a small-amplitude/high-velocity therapeutic movement.

“Physical Therapist” - A person who practices physical therapy as defined in this chapter after he or she has:

    • Successfully completed a curriculum of physical therapy accredited by a national accreditation agency approved by the Arkansas State Board of Physical Therapy; and
    • Passed a nationally recognized licensing examination.

“Physical Therapist Assistant” - A person who is licensed under this chapter and who assists the physical therapist in selected components of the physical therapy treatment intervention.

“Physical Therapy” - The care and services provided by or under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist who is licensed in Arkansas.

“Physical Therapy Aide” - An unlicensed member of the physical therapy team who may perform treatments under the direct supervision of a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant.

“Practice of Physical Therapy” - Examining and evaluating patients with mechanical, physiological, and developmental impairments, functional limitations, and disability or other health-related conditions in order to determine a physical therapy diagnosis, prognosis, and planned therapeutic intervention.

“Readily Available for Consultation”- The ability to be reached in person or by telecommunications within thirty (30) minutes.

“Spinal Manipulation and Adjustment”– The movement of the spinal joints beyond the normal range of motion.

“Supervision” - The supervising therapist retains moral, ethical, and legal responsibility for patient care and is readily available for consultation. The supervising therapist is not required to be on-site but must be at least available by telecommunication.

“Telecommunication” - The electronic transmission, conveyance, or routing of voice, data, audio, video, or any other information or signals to a point or between or among points.
